THE YEAR IS 2628

And countless souls call the Estra galaxy home. It’s a place of unimaginable distances, from the Borthan Empire in the north to the left “lung” of the Klevessan Republic. The Boe Republic brushes the southern emptiness of the Ens Gulf, and yet, even here, there is life: teeming throngs of organics jostling, cooperating, thriving, fighting, dying.

LOVE YOU FOREVER

Thge story of two children, a Klevessan boy named Kellan and a Terran girl Rayelle devoted friends who, along with the other children from a hundred worlds, endured horrific treatment from pious men hellbent to develop extreme biological traits in little bodies. Terran authorities finally discovered the lab and liberated the children. Kellan and Rayelle were torn from each other.

Years later, Kellan Kline found Rayelle again, married to a Terran politico and pregnant with his son. Happy that Rayelle had found peace, Kellan promised her again that his heart and loyalty belonged only to her.

Years later, when Rayelle called, begging for his help, Kellan had no choice but to rush to her aid, although his interference risked an interstellar war.

Reviews

There are two stories in Aphelion. Without giving away too much, the first story, Love You Forever, is a yarn about two kids who are separated after escaping a sinister laboratory and their reunion many years later. The story has a direct link to characters in Empire's Rift by Steve Rzasa, as well as links to other AR DeClerk novels. The second story, Dead Man's Drift, is set in the time of the war between the Naplians and the Grand Alliance. It involves some of the same characters as the first story. It is a romp through the Northern Terran Republic, Laterad Empire, and up into Hosan Obelisk space to save a Terran flag officer. Along the way, the encounter Truppen, Denics, and other nefarious sorts.

I love these books because, no matter the author, they are all interconnected and tell me something new about the five galaxies of the Takamo Universe and just like Kerry Nietz' novella, RHATS!, the novels are all based in the Takamo Universe and are all connected.

APHELION: STORIES OF THE TAKAMO UNIVERSE is comprised of a short story and a novella involving an experiment to create super soldiers, space pirates of a sort, interplanetary intrigue, assassins and a host of alien and strange life forms. But mostly, the tales involve love stories. Two child escapees from scientific experimentation grow older and reunite briefly for a chivalric and platonic renewal of their affection. A daughter is fascinated by a spy, and her sister falls for a cyborg. All told, the characters are lively and engaging. The book is best when showing the very human emotions of its protagonists in a very plausible and dangerous future in the Takamo universe.
