The Muto Chronicles Book II

by KERRY NIETZ

As battles rage and allegiances shift, the muto Frohic returns home an unlikely hero. Now rich beyond measure, fat from the spoils of conquest, he takes his place among the Emperor’s honored champions. His symbol is raised over the Black Wall and his name inscribed into the Book of Remembrance. Yet Frohic’s heart is troubled. His destiny unfulfilled. For somewhere in the dark reaches of—

Who is writing this stuff?

That isn’t how it is at all.

Frohic again. Listen, I got home to find squatters living in my family’s hovel and no clue as to where father, mother, and the rest of the family went. The only help I have is from someone I just met, and I half suspect she’s looking for a sire to start her own family. I don’t trust her, and I certainly don’t like her. Least, not like that.

Meanwhile, an old friend shows up with a fantastic offer. Lose years of my life on another scavenging mission! And this time we’re going to a part of the galaxy that no muto has ever seen. Much less returned from.

Did I mention there might be ants? Giant, ugly ants. Plus, a crew of lunatics. Always fighting or fussing.

If I survive, I might get to see my family again.

Do I want that?

Do I want any of this?

Reviews

I am still catching my breath after reading RHATS TOO: A TAKAMO UNIVERSE NOVEL. The book is a sequel to RHATS! Author Kerry Nietz takes the protagonist, Frohic, a member of the Muto part rat species just returned from his previous adventures, deeper into the frontier universe to salvage cyber parts in war zones to pay off debts attributed to his family. Seven crew members are assembled by Abs, Frohic’s mentor from the previous book, who now commands a ship. There is plenty corporate skullduggery and double crossing to thicken the plot. The seven crewmen are well drawn easily win the reader’s empathy. The action against humans, giant ants, giant cyborg ants, and each other is fast paced and believable. As narrator, Frohic guides the reader through it all, revealing only facts to which he is privy to make a perfect mystery. Better than the Seven Samurai, the seven Mutos fight all the way to the finish.

This was a fun book about the future adventures of Frohic, a young rhat whose family has vanished. While this book was fun, I think I enjoyed the first one more a little more. Even so, it's a good story with a few twists and turns and I do love reading a story from the point of view of a nonhuman character.

Fair warning: the spiders are closer to horror than adventure, and I like spiders. The worldbuilding is excellent, there is a body count of mostly not nice people, and the crew has secrets. I love a well-written book with a non-human sapient narrator, and Muto Frohic tells a great story.

The best way I can describe this book is Firefly, but the crew are all rodents. This is a fun space adventure that puts an unlikely crew together in a spaceship on a salvage mission to earn the freedom of the hero's family.

It follows seamlessly from the first book in the series (Rhats) but is largely a standalone adventure. It ends with the promise of many more adventures to come, which I personally will look forward to.

Kerry Nietz is one of my favorite authors and this book didn't disappoint! The characters are well developed and there's a lot of action which makes it hard to put down! If you're a fan of science fiction books, you really need to check out this book series!
